Forget the Miracle Diets

Remember that age-old truth that every mother on the planet has uttered? “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” The same applies to miracle diets. Guess what, dieters: there is no miracle diet. There’s literally no such thing. There are only a few time-tested and healthy ways to lose weight. You need to change your lifestyle, not the number on the scale. That number is just an indicator. It may indicate that your body is in an unhealthy state. It may indicate that you’re overweight. The main thing to remember is that you should forget the number and change your life instead.

It’s really easy to get motivated for a big project and then forget all about it. This is not the way to diet. Start small, but start now. There are some easy steps you can do today that are realistic. Do you have a sweet tooth? Don’t binge. Allow yourself one sweet a day and only one. Make your portion of cake or low-fat ice cream tiny. By still allowing sweets– just not in large doses– you are preventing a massive binge or “falling off the wagon.” Losing weight is a struggle. Take it in strides, not unrealistic leaps.

Increase your vegetable portions at every meal. You should be eating more fruits, veggies and grains than proteins and dairy. Unfortunately, we love meat and cheese combinations, like bacon and cheddar, ham and swiss, or a hamburger with American cheese. Discover new combinations, like roasted carrot cream pasta or a lemongrass rice dish. Put small portions on your plate. The extra effort to go back and get more may stop you from overeating. There are several resources online that will tell you what the proper serving size should be for almost every food imaginable.

If you insist on drastic dieting, at least find your minimum calorie intake level per day.
